Amy Malin is the co-founder of the popular Fitzroy art and design destination, Modern Times.
Mother and sometimes maker, Amy grew up in the arts. Her mother was an artist and her family ran a picture framing business. It was only natural for Amy to go on to study art history, jewellery design and graphic communication. Her studies were punctuated by lots of traveling, including a long time traveling solo in India.
Her eclectic mix of experiences formed the perfect foundation for starting Modern Times in 2011 with her partner, now husband, Joel Malin. Fitzroy store, Modern Times has quickly become an essential part of Melbourne’s design scene, featuring authentic vintage European design furniture sourced by Amy and Joel from Denmark, Holland and Italy, and contemporary Australian art and design.
Amy is a passionate advocate for independent design and feels very lucky to work within the amazingly talented community of Australian creatives.
We'll kick the evening off with a few questions and then open up the discussion, inviting the audience to ask Amy questions about her career/life journey. No question is “dumb” at Basic, we encourage any and and all queries, from the simplest to the most complex. If you prefer not to speak on the night, you can submit a question to us ahead of time and we’ll ask it for you anonymously.
There will be an honesty bar (cash only) selling beers from Sample, wines from Blackhearts & Sparrows and water by Antipodes. 50% of bar profits will be donated to Free to Feed.
